Creeping through the snow with its furry tail dragging behind, the Red Fox is a magnificent and sly creature that is very well known. From being the famous trickster in tales, to controlling the populations of its prey, this member of the canidae family is a very spectacular animal.
With its beautiful auburn fur and its shiny black paws, the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the largest of true foxes. According to American Expidition!, "The fur is typically a rusty red color, and the legs are darker in color, sometimes even black." In addition, they have thick, bushy tails that help keep themselves warm when winter arrives. They also have black tipped ears and teeth that help them chew food. Their fur can range from goldish-red to super dark auburn to silverish-black. A red fox's stomach, chin, and throat are a whitish tone of gray.
"Red foxes live around the world in many diverse habitats including forests, grasslands, mountains, and deserts." says National Geographic. The foxes are also able to adjust to cities and farms. If they decide to make dens, they use abandoned dens left behind by other animals instead of creating its own. If they don't want to make a den, they sleep in the open, wrapping their tail around themselves. Red foxes are found in most states in the U.S.A. and much of Canada.
Being omnivores, red foxes eat different varieties of food. Their diet includes rabbits, mice, birds, squirrels, and other mammals. They eat insects like beetles, caterpillars, crickets, and grasshoppers. To add, they eat many berries and fruit. Even if they are full, they will still prey for food because they store it for later.
